SHERLOCKED

After watching the Sherlock’s Season 4: The Final Problem, I
was so awestruck that it took me a day to come back to my senses and write. The
season finale received mixed reviews overall, the episode, for me personally
took me down to the memory lane…when I first started reading Sherlock Holmes. Not
much of a reader, but mysteries always fascinated me. Initially borrowing books
from school library…I one day knew I had to own that Sherlock Holmes collection.
And so finally convinced my parents to buy me the almost 1200 paged “Sherlock
Holmes”.
Sir Arthur Canon Doyle has indeed created a masterpiece
here, giving us a profound high functioning sociopath. This consulting
detective with his excellent observation skills, logical reasoning, deductions
and forensic science expertise made every single case worth it. 221B Baker
Street is like an address to heaven for a Sherlock fan.
They say film or TV series adaption of a book is never worth
it. But be it the book, movie or TV series, Sherlock has always bewitched me. The
eccentric chap, avoiding casual company, baffling the police inspectors and
clients with his amazing deductions, going out of the way (breaking the law) to
solve a case…all this made Sherlock the exclusive detective he is. Well, but
there aren’t just virtues, vices count equally to make a man. And one such
thing that bothers me is Sherlock Holmes from book constantly smoking tobacco and
the modern day Sherlock being a complete drug addict. Though the cigars and his
habitual usage of pipe seem charming, and the drug-induced trip to Mind Palace
is equally thrilling, the moral child in me says ‘This is wrong’. However,
being charming enough sometimes it is disappointing that this lone wolf has no
potential love interest for ‘His heart is always governed by his head’. Not in
Molly Hooper or not even in Irene Adler. The book’s ‘...the game is afoot’ or
the show’s ‘…the game is on’ is electrifying enough and makes you wonder what
will happen next!
But to make the stories what they are, the credit does not
go to Sherlock Holmes alone. The old-new characters from the book and show make
it an endearing journey. The narrator in the book or the author to Sherlock’s
blogs, his partner, roomie, his only friend, and the military man…Dr. John
Watson is a friend every person secretly wishes to have. Mary…Watson’s wife…a
trained assassin who went rogue…as skilled as she is, she helps Holmes-Watson
with their cases and proves to be their best friend too. Mycroft, Sherlock’s
sly powerful elder brother possessing even greater deduction and observation powers
not inclined to use it. Mrs. Hudson, the sweet-savage landlady of the house, of
whom I completely became a fan of after the latest episode. And none the less
James Moriarty my favorite villain so far, the criminal mastermind, who has
been haunting Sherlock in the TV series forever. The ladies Molly Hooper and
Irene Adler also should be acknowledged for their love-hate relationship with
Sherlock.
This isn’t a review for a book or TV series or anything. It is
just the love for this fictional character, which Benedict Cumberbatch brought
alive. It is my immense admiration for Sherlock Holmes for years that made me
write all this. After all, it is what it is!
